Driver Policy

Rather than penalise all drivers and giving discounts dependent upon how they drive Intelligent Marmalade starts giving maximum discount to all drivers thereby not penalising the majority who drive responsibly and sensibly. The Intelligent Marmalade scheme relies on an Ingenium Dynamics device being fitted to your car.

The Ingenium Dynamics device gathers location “celeration” (magnitudes and directions of accelerations and decelerations) and velocity data about the usage of your vehicle and transmits this data to the Ingenium Dynamics provider. The data for each journey is then analysed and a driving risk score is produced. Each journey is categorised based on the driving risk score into high (red), medium (amber) or low (green) risk.

The calculations and algorithms used to determine the driving risk score have been developed under the supervision and advice of the Transport Safety Research Centre (TSRC) at Loughborough University. TSRC is a team conducting research into all aspects of road and vehicle safety and road user behaviour.

The driving risk score results for your journeys will be available for you and the insured driver to view on a secure internet portal. The internet portal also provides detailed information relating to your journeys, including time, location, speed, braking and acceleration force, cornering, the environment and high risk manoeuvres.

Your Journeys

Journeys are categorised into three levels based on the driving risk score:

  • Green journeys will result in no premium increases or cancellation.
  • Amber journeys will result in no premium increases or cancellation but you and the insured driver will be requested to review your driving behaviour.
  • Red journeys may result in increased premiums or cancellation of the policy.

A driving risk score of 100% represents a perfect journey. A score under 55% represents a red journey.

You and the insured driver will be alerted to a red journey by e-mail and SMS text message and requested to review your journeys on the internet portal. You will also be advised of the next steps, which may, in the event of multiple red journeys, include a requirement for you to pay an additional premium or notice that we will be cancelling your policy.

Driver Disciplinary Definitions

Caution notice
A message sent to you and the insured drivers following a red journey setting out the consequences of that red journey under the caution and penalty process.

Caution and penalty process
The process through which we may issue caution notices and impose penalties in the event of a red journey.

Advisory caution notice
You or the insured drivers are permitted one red journey before entering the caution and penalty process. After this first red journey, you and the insured drivers will receive an advisory caution notice e-mail and SMS text message informing you of the first red journey and including a reminder of the caution and penalty process.

Subsequent red journeys
Subject to the 24 hour review period, once you and the insured drivers have received a first advisory caution notice, the next red journey will result in you entering the caution and penalty process. You and the insured drivers will receive a caution notice informing you of the consequences of a further red journey within the specified time period.

Policy Renewal

At the policy renewal date any previous caution notices or red journeys will be reset and the driver will start from the beginning.
